Why I don't use social networking ... PDF Print E-mail

Well, it looks as if I belong to this small species of students not using online social networking tools like twitter or facebook. My friends, family, other OU students are all addicted to it. So why don't I use it, too? Well, here are my thoughts so far:

  • Well, if I haven't spoken to someone since I left school, then there is probably a reason for this.
  • I blog things about my life as a student that I think could be helpful for other students. I think the following information is less interesting and so I don't need to tell the world: "Inés is studying", "Inés is walking around.", "Inés is wasting valuable time describing what she is doing." ...
  • I have 2 telephone numbers, 7 email addresses which I check regularly, 3 instant messaging accounts. If we want talk, there are already plenty of good ways to do it.
  • I don't want others to have the ability to sell my data without my permission. There is something called data protection - at least in Europe. I am not so sure about the rest of the world.
  • I already have less free time, so why should I spend it by reading: "OMG, look at that dog dressed as a person!" or "What do you mean Kelly’s been hitting on another guy?"
Not using those online social networks saves my brain from information overload . As a result, I can put my full focus into things that really matter, and I can maintain an organized mind.
  • And look at the bright side: Since I don’t use any online social networks, I am forced to actually talk to people face to face. My friendships are cultivated slowly and surely, with much less fickleness than it would be on Facebook etc. Furthermore, the way I treat people and the way I am treated is not by how I “friend” and “un-friend” people. I also speak more understandably because “my wrds r not wrttn lk dis.”

Blog Carnival PDF Print E-mail

Markus from Fernstudium Infos (German website about distance learning) called my attention to this blog carnival of the "day of distance learning" (Blog-Carnival des Fernstudientages)

The questions are in German, so I will reply in German.

M820: Introductory on-line tutorial PDF Print E-mail

Yesterday I attended my first on-line tutorial this year. Ben Mestel (course chair of M820) hold this Elluminate tutorial and I really liked it. Firstly he introduced himself and the other tutors and OU staff who also attended the on-line tutorial. Altogether 95 people attended the on-line tutorial which was amazing, because last year when I "visited" the MST209 tutorials from Maria (which were fantastic and helped a lot) about 4-8 people attended.

The purpose of those eTutorials (as they call them) is to help us students to cope with the course material, the TMA and the exam. Also Ben showed us how to submit TMAs using the University's eTMA process. He stressed that using the eTMA system does not mean that the TMA has to be prepared electronically, moreover he said that the eTMA system is able to cope with scanned TMAs as well.

Ben also pointed out that we can download a Course Guide - I have not done it yet, but I'll plan to work through the Course Guide as soon as possible.

Then we were told that we should not spend too much time on Chapter 1 as this is revision and also we should not dwell too long on Chapter 2. Chapter 3 and 4 are significant for TMA1, since the priniciple technics are introduced in chapter 4. After this, Ben introduced two topics: "Distance between two points" and "Brachistochrone". Unfortunately I was not able to follow entirely, because I was not able to understand some English words and moreover I realized that I have to repeat Taylor expansions and Order notation. I guess both topics were introduced in MST209. The interesting thing about this was that as we all know from school and also intution tells us: the shortest path between two points is a straight line. But what is the fastest path between two points? This video on youtube.com about this problem (called Brachistochrone) from a physics professor explained it.

Then the presentation was over and we were allowed to ask questions. One student asked if the exam in October would have the same level of difficulty as the TMAs. And Ben's answer was yes, but he also explained that they will take into account that for preparing a TMA we have far more time than for a TMA.

Also, a question about past exam papers came up. Ben said that they would not release the past exam papers, but they will write another Specimen Paper, so that we will have 2 Specimen Papers. Also we can attend the eTutorial on exam revision and also exam revision can be visited on the M500 weekend (which I attended the last two years and I can recommened it!).

The next tutorials are appointed with regard to the TMA deadlines (always about 14 days before deadline).

In the MSc Maths forum on Moodle the moderator posted the student numbers and if the students live in the UK or somewhere else. And I am the only student from Germany studying M820 and M823. There is another student living in Germany but studying two different courses. What a pity. I really hoped to find someone for a self help group in Germany.

It is also interesting that about 16% of the students are female. Wow I really thought that that figure would be higher ...
