Demise of named science degrees PDF Print E-mail
Open University

The British Goverment decided to no longer subsidise students which already have an equal or higher degree than they are aiming for a few months ago. And also the credit crunsh is showing its traces. So every part of the Open University has to save 17% or more.

Now the Science faculty has decided to offer only one named degree (BSc (hons) Science is under consideration) and of course the open degree in the future. I understand that they have to do something, but to sum up all named science degrees is not good for German (and probably also for the other Continential European) students, because in Germany (Europe) the acceptance of the open degree is tending to zero and on the other hand I assume that personnel managers are used to meaningful titles, like BSc Molecular Science which shows that the student studied a special amount of chemistry and biology. Furthermore the OU has some kind of a monopoly on distance learning science courses in Germany, but the German goverment (the Kultusministerkonferenz) decided to open the university access more, because now students who were able to finish year one are able to study as "normal" students afterwards.

IMHO the Open University did not consider all possibilities and also they did not consider all effects their decission will have on further students registrations.

Hi Ines

Came across your blog. I am currently studying MS221 and M249, and considering doing MST209 next year. Im impressed how many courses you are doing. Doing just 2 30 point courses together is hard enough!

I would be interested to have a copy of the 209 study calendar and would be very grateful if you could send it to me (at eMail below)

Many thanks

Jonathan

I hope that they will at least keep the study plans for the various named degrees so students have a guideline to follow when aiming for a specific subject, e.g. life sciences. If they are planning to keep a BSc (Hons) and the Open Degree, how will the two actually differ from each other? And how will potential employers know if I studied physics or chemistry? Just by the academic transcript?

First of all, I am so sorry. I had a typo in my email address and so the software could not inform me about new comments.

Yes, the academic transcipt is meant to tell the employers what you've studied. As far as I know, the only difference between BSc (hons) Natural Science (or what so ever) and the Open degree will be compulsary residential schools.

The main discussion goes on in the Science Chat on First Class. You find the Science Chat by clicking on "Open University" then "Science" and then "Science chat"

Well, I worry that this might happen to other facilities - like maths, computing and technology, too.
